The New Freemat Primer is Here!

Gary Schafer, 31 August 2011

After two years of work, Tim Cyders and I have finished the next version of "The Freemat Primer". This edition is written for Freemat version 4.0. It's expanded from the first edition, which was written for Freemat version 3.5.

Tony Sale, RIP

Figure 1. Tony Sale at his beloved Colossus machine. In this picture, he's explaining how the machine looks for the probability of the letters in the alphabet. When the machine found that the various probabilities matched that for German, it stopped so that the technicians could check whether the machine had actually found a solution.
Figure 2. Here Tony is providing a general overview of the entire machine.
Figure 3. Tony is explaining the construction of the system. He's also explaining the amount of work it took to keep the machine functioning.
Figure 4. Tony is explaining the histograms (letter frequency) for the different alphabets that the machine would use to search for potential solutions to the Enigma machines.

The BBC is reporting that Tony Sale, a primary force behind the rebuilding of the COLOSSUS code-cracking machine at Bletchley Park, UK, has passed away. Bletchley Park is also reporting the same thing. Not that that is weird. But its an indication of how popular Tony was.

I had the opportunity to visit Bletchley Park and have Tony Sale demonstrate the machine. Tony obviously cared about history, especially the history of this particular machine.

I don't have the words (if you've read many of my posts, you know I'm a terrible writer) to express my feelings this loss. RIP, Tony. Thanks for your service.
